Primary Blog/Law #2: The Oxygen Mask — Beat Burnout Before It Beats You

Every flight, same speech: put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. Every parent ignores it in real life. Fathers like us ignore it professionally.

Here's the math nobody says out loud: your child's care system has exactly one load-bearing wall — you. The appointments, the fights with the school, the income, the 3 a.m. seizure watch. If you go down, the whole structure goes down. Yet we treat our own maintenance as a luxury we'll get to "after things calm down."

Things do not calm down. That's not pessimism; it's the schedule.

I burned myself to the wick learning this. The strain of raising a disabled child breaks marriages at a documented, brutal rate — and it doesn't break them through lack of love. It breaks them through two exhausted people with nothing left to give each other.

Law #2: The Oxygen Mask. Your rest is not stolen from your family. It is infrastructure for your family. In the Survival Guide I call it the two-breaks-a-week rule: two blocks of time, on the calendar, that belong to you the way a doctor's appointment belongs to your child — because that is exactly what they are.

You are not failing. You're carrying too much, alone. Put the mask on. That's Law #2.
