Primary Blog/Law #1: Radical Acceptance — The War You Didn't Choose

Every father of a disabled child carries two children: the one he imagined, and the one in front of him.

The imagined one plays little league. Gets the girl. Gives the wedding toast. Nobody hands you a certificate that says that child is gone — but a diagnosis is a funeral for him all the same, and most of us attend it alone, standing in a hospital corridor, nodding at a doctor while our whole imagined future quietly leaves the building.

Here's what I learned the hard way with my son Eddie: as long as you're fighting for the imagined child, you can't fight for the real one. Every hour spent on "why us" is an hour the boy in the wheelchair in front of you doesn't get.

Law #1: Radical Acceptance. Not resignation — acceptance is not surrender. Radical acceptance means you stop negotiating with reality and start operating in it. The diagnosis is the terrain. You are not required to like the terrain. You are required to fight on it.

The day I stopped mourning the Eddie I invented was the day I finally met the Eddie I have — the strongest, most relentlessly joyful person I know. The war I didn't choose gave me a son I wouldn't trade.

Accept radically. Then get to work. That's Law #1.
